Got my ego stroked
egoSurf goes to the search engines ( google, yahoo, msn, technorati and del.icio.us ) searches on your name and scores you on how many times your name is linked to your blog and how high it is in the search rankings.
I ended up for a short period of time in the top 50 egos outranking Richard Rutter of Clagnut and Clearleft fame who pointed me there in the first place.
Why should egoSurf rank me higher than Richard Rutter or even my work colleague Jonathan Strahan. Both who easily outscore me when searching on our names on Google. Richard gets 164,000 matches, Jonathan 50,700 and I get a measily 10,400 and thas is with the aid of sharing my name with a PR consultant in Scotland.
The answer is quite simple, because I regularly comment in other people’s blog using my name and providing this blog’s URL. Google ranks blogs and their comments fairly high and as egoSurf only uses the top 50 results, otherwise it would take too long. I score much higher than other people who have a much bigger footprint on the web. My ego is now partially deflated, back to a couple of other projects
Added 28 January 2006 1000: egoSurf decreases your ego points over time (which is why I beat Richard Rutter), I started with 5617 ego points, it had dropped to 355 this morning, until I did another search and it was back up to 5617 ego points, it is slowly declining. My current ego points are now:

Miles, depends on who you are calling a comments whore.
To rank highly on egoSurf, you need to your name attached to your blog’s url in the top 50 searches in Google and top 40 searches in Yahoo. The best way to do that is to comment in other peoples blogs. If you do that just to increase your ranking on egoSurf that is worse than comment whoring.
ps Miles you will never make it big at egoSurf because you use Miles instead of Miles Burke ;-)
