Extra rest week before A race, what can go wrong

This week’s targets

The main aim of this week is the State Masters Criterium title on Sunday, so easier week.

  • two intensity days, race on Sunday
  • one three hour endurance rides
  • one short endurance rides.
  • two weight training sessions.
  • one yoga class.

Monday

Managed to get to the gym

  • 4 x 7 Barbell Front Squats
  • 4 x 6 Barbell Romanian Deadlifts
  • 2 x 8 Bulgarian Split squats in the smith machine
  • 2 x 20 Hanging Knee Raises

Attempted a beach run in the afternoon, but felt so bad abandoned after two minutes.

Tuesday to Saturday

Did not feel great, took each day as it came, but felt like I had a head cold, stuffed nose, sore ears and throat, not sense of balance and swollen feet. So no exercise at all and doctors on Friday.

Sunday

Felt good enough to attempt State Masters Criterium . Was not the first rider dropped, but struggled. When the young guys (55 to 59 age group) attacked after 10 minutes, I ended out the back, with 3 riders just sitting in front of me. After 15 minutes of chasing and losing ground, the leaders came pass and I spent a lap hanging on (a commissaire advised me this is a legal tactic last year). The last 10 minutes was spent racing for 3rd in the 65 to 69 age group, I finished 4th.

I had a bad asthma attack on the train home. I have not had one this bad for over two years and then it involved bush fire smoke, there was no smoke today.

  • 1 hours ride time, one intensity day
  • 1 hour lifting weights

Next week

No plans, waiting for results of blood test.
