Exercise induced allergies

This week’s plan

Hopefully a return to normality

  • two intensity day, race on Sunday
  • one three hour endurance rides
  • one or two short endurance rides.
  • two weight training sessions.
  • one yoga class.

With one of the short endurance rides to include high torque efforts.

Monday

Two hours endurance at top of zone 2, split into 4 20 minute blocks, after 20 minute warm up.

  • First block at self selected cadence, 80RPM.
  • Second block at high cadence for me 95RPM.
  • Third block at low cadence 60RPM.
  • Fourth block self selected cadence 75rpm

Surprised that the third block, I averaged 3 more watts while my heart rate averaged 3 less beats a minute. Still I felt my legs working more on this block.

The final block I averaged one less watts while my heart rate averaged 1 more beats a minute. Borderline cardiac drift, really need to do a longer ride and not play with the cadence.

Tuesday

40:20s 3 sets of 10 nailed every interval, wanted to throw up late in every set, so happy with the result. I wanted to do 40:20s during this block as we still have a few criteriums left this season and really want to work on my snap and VO2max.

Finished the day of with a 2km beach run with the dogs.

Wednesday/Thursday

Woke up in the morning with the usual stuffy nose, sore ears, sore throat, feeling fatigued and vertigo turned up to the max.

I have realised that whatever is happening to my body, is directly related to high intensity day. If I race or do high intensity intervals, my body just stops working for the next few days. Doctors appointment made.

Friday

Doctor’s appointment, asked if I suffer from hayfever, checked my ears and nose as reports “exercise induced allergies”. Prescribed anti-histamine and glucocorticoids, together with rest, then reducing the intensity of my exercise.

Saturday

Rest day, still not feeling great.

Sunday

Rest day, still not feeling great.

Weekly totals

3 hours ride time, one intensity day

Next week’s plan

Ease back into, slowly. Wait for symptoms to disappear and stick to short endurance rides at first with weights and yoga.
